This year the Foundation awarded nearly $15,000 in enhancement grants to faculty and staff.  These grants are made possible through gifts to the Foundation from college employees and the community.

A panel consisting of SWIC Foundation Board members and college faculty and staff reviewed the proposals and provided funding recommendations.

Grant Recipients

Janice Buchwald - $900 to sponsor event at the East St. Louis Community College Center to motivate and educate students on the importance of earning their GED certificate and continuing on into post-secondary education.

Rick Gregory - $1,000 to fund an African-American Writers Workshop series for spring 2008 to expose students at the East St. Louis Community College Center to people who have worked to develop the craft of the written word through poetry, fiction, and prose.

Nicole Hancock - $750 to support the ENG 101/LIT 113 Learning Community class to attend the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis production of “Ella” in spring 2008.

Dr. Barbara Hunter - $1,000 for speaker Robyn Ochs to present during Women’s History Month.  In addition, Ms. Ochs will provide workshops and talks throughout her visit to various classes.

Patricia Keller - $800 for a “Self Care” workshop hosted by the Counseling Department for 100 individuals during the spring semester and will be facilitated by subject matter expert Linda Wing.

Lea Maue - $1,300 for English as a Second Language students to visit the city of Chicago for an overnight trip to provide multicultural and learning experiences.

Anitra McIntyre - $2,100 to purchase training equipment for the women’s self-defense classes that currently serves the college as well as the college’s district communities.

Donna Moody - $1,000 to support SWIC multicultural programs for the Minority Transfer and Multicultural Student Services Center.

Martha Nelson/Yvonne Fricker - $1,200 to support a two-part “Network of Success Forum” for 75-100 internship students from the Business Division to interact with successful SWIC alumni.

Doris Olah - $1,450 to purchase flat screen monitors for the SeniorLink Computer Program to assist mature adults with better visual acuity for more success in their training.

Libby Reuter - $1,000 to purchase the “Steam Turbine Photo” by Richard Sprengeler for exhibition on the Belleville and East St. Louis campuses.

Jessica Seders - $1,000 for expansion of the Foster Grandparent Program of Southwestern Illinois College to include Randolph County.  Originally started in the East St. Louis area 40+ years ago, SWIC now runs the program and began serving all of St. Clair County.

Karen Stallman - $500 to fund the Art du Jour annual art event for Monroe/Randolph county high school students.  This 3-day event for students to celebrate their excellence and creativity includes workshops, judging, and public reception and awards.

Valorie Toberman - $600 to purchase a scanner and DVD player to be used to provide quality professional development to Adult Education students enrolled in Office Technology, Information Processing, and Job Skills classes at the Sam Wolf Granite City campus.
